20% technology, 20% process, and 60% people

Between regulatory updates and vendor pitches, your inbox is probably bursting with maritime tech news, so we're cutting through the noise to bring you something different - insights from the people implementing these solutions.

This week, I sat down with Mike Michaloliakos, Group Head of ICT and Cyber Security at TMS. He's responsible for the digital transformation of a 130+ vessel fleet. In our conversation, he talked me through his approach to making transformation a success.

The maritime industry is in the midst of a digital overhaul—ditching paper, outdated systems, and low-frequency data for cutting-edge software and real-time insights.

It’s a necessary leap forward, but let’s be honest—it’s not for the faint-hearted. Overhauling an entire fleet's digital solutions is enough to overwhelm even the most seasoned industry leaders.

Enter Michalis Michaloliakos (Mike), Group Head of ICT and Cyber Security at TMS.

With over 13 years of ICT and Cyber experience under his belt, Michaloliakos is currently steering the company’s digital transformation journey. This is no easy feat considering TMS manages over 130 vessels across tanker, gas, and dry bulk sectors through its global network of offices, with another 45 vessels currently under construction.

"It's crucial to identify solutions that match an organisation's DNA - the people working there and their culture."
